A 1962 Fender Jazz Bass has just arrived: a rare combination of a slab fingerboard neck and the first three-control-knob layout.

The Jazz Bass was introduced in 1960. Early examples used the “stack knob” system, which allowed separate volume and tone controls for the neck and bridge pickups. Due to issues with volume balance and usability, Fender changed to the now-standard three-knob control layout in the second half of 1961.

Around June 1962, Fender switched the fingerboard to a round-laminated type, meaning the three-knob slab-board Jazz Bass was only produced for a short period. This newly arrived bass is a 1962 model with that desirable “three-knob” specification and a slab fingerboard neck.

Cosmetically, it shows plenty of honest wear from years of playing, with a beat-up look typical of original vintage gear. However, playability, including the neck condition, is described as excellent.

The nut and frets have been replaced, while the assembly, including the pickups, remains original.

Tonally, it delivers the classic Jazz Bass sound and is described as producing the distinctive tone of a “slab Jazz Bass,” whether using flatwound or roundwound strings.
