A late 1964 to early 1965 Marshall JTM45 has just arrived, featuring a gold-colored plexi panel and a gold square “Marshall” logo panel.
After prototype production, the earliest Marshall amplifiers began production around 1962. The first versions used an “offset chassis” design, where the chassis was mounted toward the right side of the cabinet for better balance when carrying. This was soon changed to the more common centered chassis layout. Later, exterior materials also changed from the early white RS-style covering to the familiar black Tolex with gold piping, leading toward the classic Marshall look.
This newly arrived JTM45 shows only minor capacitor replacements carried out for maintenance, while the main parts, including the transformers, are described as original. Maintenance was performed upon arrival.
The sound is described as something that can only be experienced from early-1960s-era Marshalls: rich harmonics and an expansive tone, whether clean or pushed into crunch. Because it predates Marshall’s big late-1960s rise, production numbers were limited, and many players may never have had the chance to experience one.
The description also notes that Eric Clapton used a Marshall from this period during his time with the John Mayall band, paired with a 4x12 cabinet (described as fitted with Alnico G12 speakers), on stage and in recordings. It is also said that due to trouble during a tour in Greece, he had to leave that rig behind and later acquired the famous “JTM45 combo” associated with that album cover.
The black Tolex exterior on this unit appears older, but it has been determined that it may have been restored, and the amp is being offered at a fair price as a rare “Plexi Gold Logo” era JTM45.
